To complete my last Environmental Studies course requirement,
I took Environmental Communications because of the stellar reputation of the professor, Celia Alario. Ms. Alario is a professional in communications that has worked on a number of prominent marketing campaigns for environmental organizations. I learned how to frame contentious politicized issues in a way that can reach all parties.
In this assignment I acted as a communication consultant representing a
non-government organization called Sustainable Travel International.
I specifically focused on protection of the dying world wonder,
the Great Barrier Reef. The communication efforts consisted of a press release and an opinion editorial. The press release is addressed openly to the general public. It includes the basic information of crisis and how to approach it.
The opinion editorial is less formal and meant to be persuasive. I wrote it from the perspective of an important local businessman. In the editorial piece, he pleads for other tourism business owners in the region to join his efforts in controlling damage to the reef. I employ language that is meant to connect to other businessman on a professional and personal level.
