I enjoy writing about topics I have genuine interest about and sustainability issues is one of those topics. In a Writing for Journalism course, my professor gave the class free choice to pick any subject to cover for the culminating article. I decided to write about shifting priorities in the shoe industry towards sustainable production.
Sustainable footwear is a topic that both is intriguing to me and one I knew I could address successfully. I was able to craft a solid and informative article because of my background knowledge in environmental studies and my ability to find quality interviewees. The co-founder of a sustainable shoe company from my hometown and a high up employee at Deckers were kind enough to answer my provocative questions.
Journalistic writing is slightly different than I am used to. Typically, my university level papers are much more academic and formal than a journalism article. I leaned towards using conciseness and a playful tone with the use of headers, quotes, and pictures to break up the text. This article, "Walking the Walk", is dense on information pertaining to the topic, however follows a journalistic style. I enjoyed practicing the journalism process and look to improve my writing in this style.
